Abstract

The article represents an attempt to find a place of obelisks in the symbolic system of European emblems in the 16th century. Based on Emblematum liber written by the French antiquarian Jean-Jacques Boissard, the author concludes that the obelisk was a visible marker of the pagan world. At the same time, in the context of Christian morals, it implied the ephemerality of material wealth, the destructive effect of vice and the imminence of death.
