"The Hypereides Principle": How tolerant were the Athenians of bribes?

The article is devoted to the study of the level of tolerance of Athenian society in the 5th-4th centuries BC to the manifestations of bribery. The author systematizes the main conclusions drawn in historiography on this issue, after which he proceeds to a detailed analysis of a fragment from Hypereides’ speech "Against Demosthenes" (Hyp. V. Fr. VI [VII]. Col. 24-25). Based on a comparison of the Russian translation of this fragment with translations in foreign publications, the author comes to the conclusion that the Russian version does not fully reflect the semantic content of Hypereides’ original statement. The analysis of the speeches of the oratorical corps indicates the absence of direct evidence confirming the tolerant attitude of Athenian society towards bribery, if it did not harm the interests of the entire polis.References
