Abstract

The article deals with certain aspects of the biography of the famous historian of Russian law, Professor M. F. Vladimirsky-Budanov (1838-1916). There are four "intersections" of the researcher's life path with the business dynasty of the Demidovs: in Tula, Kiev (twice) and Yaroslavl. Two periods stand out in the biography of M. F. Vladimirsky-Budanov as a scientist and teacher: "Kyiv" and "Yaroslavl". The most productive was the "Kiev" period, which lasted a total of 47 years. At the same time, even within the framework of the five-year "Yaroslavl" period, the scientist made a significant contribution to the study of historical and legal problems. He was one of the authors of the concept of the Lyceum legal education, in which the importance was attached to the knowledge of law through hindsight. In Yaroslavl that the scientist laid down and tested original conceptual approaches to the study of the history of law (emphasis on the knowledge of legal monuments, a broad understanding of Russian law, zemskaya theory of the genesis of statehood). M. F. Vladimirsky-Budanov within the framework of the Yaroslavl Law School became the founder of a special historical-legal direction. In modern conditions many of the scientist's ideas receive a new "sounding", they can be in demand in the socio-political sphere, become a component of the methodology of legal knowledge, to act as a basis for the preparation of individual training courses in secondary and higher schools. They include ideas about the formation of the Russian state primarily on the basis of internal processes in Slavic society rather than as a result of influence from outside, about the common principles of Slavic law, which later found expression in Russian legislation, about the identity of domestic political, legal and other institutions, about the importance of continuity in their evolution. In the future, the study of the life path of M. F. Vladimirsky-Budanov can become a basis for cooperation between scientific centers with which the fate of the legal historian was connected. In Russia, there is a need for a more detailed study of the biography and scientific legacy of the scientist and the perpetuation of his memory.
