British identity in political discourse in Great Britain (based on speeches of Conservative MPs in 2010-2016)

Abstract

The article deals with the scope of British identity in Conservative MPs’ rhetoric in 2010-2016 which is used as one of the key ideas in political communication. Analysis of British definitions in modern dictionaries, as well as vocabulary used by the Tories to appeal to the British people led us to make a conclusion that national identity is redefined as a value-oriented rather than a ethnically specific notion.
