Abstract

The article dwells on the fates of neologisms of Present-Day English after they stop being perceived as new words, on the basis of different types of Modern English dictionaries. As a result of the undertaken analysis several ways of development are outlined: they can be preserved in the language in practically the same meanings in which they were first registered; the words can change semantically and stylistically; the former neologisms can be shifted to the lexical periphery or ousted from the language; finally, fashionable neologisms, or buzzwords, after enjoying a brief flurry of popularity can survive in the lexicon as metaphorically re-thought, rare or historical words.
