Descriptive verbal-nominal phrase as a linguistic universal

The article examines the interpretation of the descriptive verbal-nominal phrases, that was presented at the scientific works of the foreign linguists. There is a great variety of terms that are used to name analytical constructions. They reflect the diffuse nature of the combinations that join characteristics of different linguistic units, such as idiom, word-combination and word. Particular attention is given to the factors, such as possibility of adjectival extension and rearrangement of the components, that help to distinguish descriptive verbal-nominal phrases from phraseological unit. In the survey the author comes to the conclusion that verb desemantization, semantic integrity of combination, subordinating connection between elements, realization of the attributive valency and compatibility of the structural change are universal characteristics of the descriptive verbal-nominal phrase.References
